History of Salehurst

Published in 1914 by the author this book tells the history of the parish using historical documents and his own personal memories along with other authors works.

The book is not only a physical history but also contains some genealogical interests as well.  These genealogical interests are covered in chapters such as "Monumental Inscriptions", " Some Ancient homes and Families", "The parish Charities", "Local Industries", "Nonconformity in Salehurst" and the "Labour Unrest in 1830".  Also contained in this book is a list of all the incumbents and the Churhcwardens.

Where is Salehurst situated?  The present parish of Salehurst comprises the villages of Robertsbridge, Salehurst and a little of Hurst Green which is very much as it was in times gone by.  However one can add to this list Silverhill, now a part of Salehurst and Northbridge Street, now a part of Robertsbridge.

Salehurst and Robertsbridge sit East and West of the present A21 respectively and some 13 miles North of Hastings.  Both villages have over time changed but one can still see many of the old buildings.  Mentioned in the book is the timber framed building which has no chimney and even today some 92 years later this building still exists. 

I am sure that any one reading this book could take a walk through Robertsbridge High Street and pick out today the properties Mr Hodson mentions.
